Site-Specific Installation and Web-based App., Some Observations..., Group exhibition curated by Lia Zaaloff, Christian Duvernois Gallery, New York, NY, USA

This project is part of an ongoing project which considers how people nurture their sense of belonging in urban neighborhoods where gentrification affects and threatens displacement and alienation. To understand the city's idiosyncratic characteristics, using my camera and iPhone, I documented my daily journeys and interactions in areas undergoing gentrification, taking special interests in outdoor communal spaces such as playgrounds and gardens; and noted my personal impressions of ephemeral details such as smells, sounds, sights and mood.

This documentation is synthesized in an web-based app that is played on an iPad, and was presented in a site-specific installation created for the gallery. I plan expand this project in several ways, including to return to NYC to observe the evolution of the documented sites and of my subjective impressions.

Avec ce projet, je m'attarde à la manière dont les gens développent leur sentiment d'appartenance dans des quartiers new-yorkais en cours de gentrification. Cherchant à saisir les caractéristiques idiosyncratiques de la métropole américaine, j'ai documenté, en mai et juin 2016, mes déplacements et interactions dans des espaces post-indutriels convertis notamment en terrains de jeu improvisés et jardins communautaires. J'y ai noté des détails éphémères tels que les odeurs, les sons ainsi que certains éléments visuels que j'y ai alors perçus, les interactions dont j'ai été témoin et mon impression de l'ensemble.

Cette documentation a par la suite été incorporée dans un application Web présentée sur un iPad intégré à une installation en galerie. Lors de mes futurs séjours à New York, je compte observer l'évolution des sites documentés, y noter mes impressions subjectives puis mettre à jour le projet.
